Myanmar Earthquake: Death toll rises to nearly 700

Data updated by the Myanmar military government as of the morning of March 29 said that the earthquake in the Mandalay region,

central Vietnam, had killed 694 people, injured 1,670, and left 68 missing.

According to Reuters, on March 29, AFP quoted the Myanmar military government as saying that the death toll in the strong earthquake

in the country had increased to 694 while 1,670 others were injured and 68 were missing.

According to the United States Geological Survey (UGSG), the earthquake occurred at 12:50 p.m. on March 28, 2025, Myanmar time,

or 1:20 p.m. on the same day, Vietnam time, shaking Myanmar and many neighboring countries such as Thailand,

Laos and China... with a magnitude of up to 7.7.

The Myanmar Meteorological and Hydrological Service said that this earthquake caused at least 12 aftershocks, with magnitudes

ranging from 2.8 to 7.5, shaking the Southeast Asian region.

According to the USGS, the number of aftershocks could be up to 14, with most of the aftershocks occurring within a few hours

of the main earthquake. The agency said the strongest was a magnitude 6.7 aftershock, which occurred about 10 minutes later.

Two aftershocks measuring 4.9 and 6.7 were recorded about 32km from the city of Mandalay, while others spread in

straight lines to the north and south.

The USGS estimates that the death toll from the earthquake in Myanmar could be more than 10,000.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has sent condolences to Myanmar and Thailand, and offered support to the two

Southeast Asian neighbors after the earthquake.

On social network X, President Prabowo wrote: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of both countries in this difficult time.

Indonesia is ready to provide all necessary support for recovery efforts in the affected areas"./.
