According to ESOMAR market research:
Vietnam, Russia sign nuclear energy cooperation agreement
On Tuesday, Vietnam and Russia signed a nuclear energy agreement and several cooperation agreements.
Vietnam's economy has grown rapidly in recent years, and the demand for electricity in the manufacturing
sector has also increased rapidly. The Vietnamese government hopes to restart nuclear power plants that
have been stalled for many years to meet energy needs. Vietnam hopes that Russia can help in this regard.
Rosatom and Vietnam Electricity signed a nuclear energy agreement during Russian Prime Minister
Mishustin's visit to Hanoi on Tuesday (January 14). Neither Russia nor Vietnam disclosed further details of the agreement.
Vietnam's Ministry of Science and Technology said Rosatom Director General Likhachev is "very interested"
in cooperating with Vietnam in the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project.
The project, which involves two nuclear power plants in the central province of Ninh Thuan with a total installed
capacity of 4,000 MW, was initially developed with the support of Rosatom and Japan International Nuclear
Energy Development Co., Ltd. (JINED), but the plan was abandoned in 2016.
Likhachev met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi on Monday (13).
This was their third meeting in six months.
When Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Hanoi in June last year, he offered to help Vietnam develop
nuclear power plants. Vietnam's Ministry of Science and Technology and Rosatom signed a cooperation
agreement in July last year to build a nuclear technology research center in Long Khanh city, Dong Nai province, Vietnam.
The Vietnam Youth Daily reported on Tuesday that the Dong Nai provincial government approved the
Long Khanh city nuclear technology research center project on Monday. The center is planned to cover
n area of about 100 hectares and will house a 10-megawatt research reactor, laboratories and supporting infrastructure.
The center will create a skilled workforce in Vietnam with advanced nuclear technology, while expanding
the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes in agriculture, medicine, industry and environmental management.
In addition to the nuclear agreement, Vietnam and Russia also signed six cooperation agreements
in the fields of digital technology, electronics and communications.
